Stable
vices are far too common in horses/ponies and are mostly due to
a mixture of boredom and stress related situations. They vary from
mild forms of intermittant activity such as door banging or mild
weaving to severe conditions of cribbiting, weaving, stable walking.
Many
of these conditions can result in your horse/pony causing damage
to itself. For example,a door banger may result in having soft swellings
develop on one or both knees. This does not usually cause a performance
problem but it can result in a reduction in sale value due to cosmetic
reasons, or may, in the future lead to problems with arthritis.
There
are a whole range of ideas and treatments that you can use to aid
the treatment of your horse/pony's problem but many can be expensive
and look rather cruel.

For
a Weaver:
Using a piece of baler twine from a bale of hay, tie two Monstalix
together and hang them from the middle of the middle of the stable
door so that they are hanging down. When you horse/pony tries to
weave, firstly the monstalix will swing around which will put him
off but better than that he can play with the monstalix and hopefully
reduce his weaving.
Stable
Door Banging:
This mostly appears at feedtime when your horse/pony is impatient
about being fed. So why not give him something that is tasty and
fun to play with that he can munch on while waiting to be fed.
Crib
Biting:
Crib Biting is mostly a boredom problem and your horse/pony
will try and crib on anything that is solid especially the top of
a stable door or even a food bowl.
Monstalix can help be providing a diversion - place one in the feed
bowl and hag one up near his normal cribbing location and hopefully
his attention will be diverted to playing with the monstalix and
not ruining your stable door.
Stable
Walking:
Well, this is a difficult one as it is usually stress related rather
than boredom instigated. Currently, we have not yet tried a Monstalix
with a stable walker so we have no experience to call on, but we
can only suggest that with other stable vices the sheer presence
of a Monstalix and its smell will cause the horse to pause and take
a nibble. Hopefully, this will break its pattern and may well reduce
its stable walking.
If
anyone provides Monstalix to a horse with a stable vice we would
love to hear from them.Click
