The Equine Facilties at Writtle :
Writtle College Equine Training and Development
Centre provides stabling for around seventy
horses and incorporates a range of stable
design features. The 50 x 40 m indoor arena,
two large outdoor arenas, jumping paddock
and cross country course provide an excellent
teaching resource for practical stable management
and equitation teaching and training. The
Centre is also equipped with a weighbridge
and horsewalker, used within the teaching
of applied Equine Science modules

The
Equine Training and Development Centre
also provides a 20 box Student DIY
Livery Yard. Students taking advantage
of Writtle's DIY livery have use of
all College facilities and the opportunity
to compete in Riding Club and College-run
events.
The
well-established Lordships Stud is
set on a picturesque 20 hectare site.
The stud has two permanent fell stallions,
is currently producing several homebred
colts and has a range of competition
stallions visiting on a regular basis.
The yard houses approximately 40 animals
at any one time. This includes a range
of mares from native fell ponies through
to show jumpers and youngstock of
all types which are produced and go
on to compete in many disciplines.
Its
modern facilities provide an excellent
backdrop for student training and
the production of quality competition
horses. Students are involved in all
aspects of stud management and young
horse production, from conception
to sale. Specialist facilities at
the stud include modern veterinary
examination and semen collection areas,
semen analysis laboratory, manege,
indoor school, treadmill and foaling
boxes with CCTV (Foalcam) which can
be accessed by students via a website.
The stud’s latest addition to its
facilities is a brand new "Computer
Aided Sperm Analysis" system of which
this is the first of its type in the
country.

(Hons) Equine Science |

|
| The
expansion of the equine industry in recent
years has led to more diversity in the positions
available to graduates. In particular, there
has been an increasing requirement for specialism
in both equine science and equine business
management. Growth in the various equestrian
competitive disciplines has led to a need
for graduates with broad scientific training
who can apply their knowledge to specific
equine situations. The specific aim of this
course is to develop an extensive understanding
of the scientific principles behind equine
athletic performance and other related areas. |
BSc
(Hons) Equine
Business Management. |

| The
horse industry has undergone rapid development
in the last decade and a wide range of career
opportunities exist for those who can offer
a combination of relevant scientific, practical
skills in areas such as equitation, breeding
and stud management, youngstock production
and marketing, whilst at the same time developing
commercial awareness and business skills.
Within the second and third years of the course,
students with the desire to manage an equestrian
enterprise or run their own business, are
able to develop a specialism in equine business
management through the study of specified
modules. The business management skills aquired
are transferable to many other professions
outside the immediate equine sector. |

| The
UK equine industry consists of a very large
number of increasingly diverse enterprises,
each demanding different knowledge and skills.
Despite this diversity, common skills are
required for the success of any equine organisation
and its employees, including commercial awareness
and practical competence in the management
of horses. This programme has a strong vocational
emphasis, allowing the development of practical
skills in areas such as equitation, teaching,
breeding and stud management and youngstock
training. |

Stud Management |

| The
equine breeding industry is wide and diverse,
employing many tens of thousands of people
throughout the world. There are over 2,000
registered breeders and over 70 breeding associations
and societies in the UK alone. This course
aims to provide students with the opportunity
to widen and enhance their practical skills,
whilst developing an extensive understanding
of the scientific and management principles
behind equine breeding. |
MSc
Human & Equine
Sports Science. |

| The
aim of this course is to provide graduates
from a variety of disciplines with an advanced
understanding of equine and human exercise
science through the study of biological and
physiological systems. Applicants will normally
hold an Honours degree (2.2 or above) in physical
education, physiology, biochemistry, biological
science, anatomy, sports medicine, recreation
and leisure management, or any equine studies/science
or allied subjects. Professional qualifications
may also be acceptable and every application
will be considered on its individual merits.

from a variety of disciplines with an advanced
understanding of equine science through the
study of biological and physiological systems.
Applicants will normally hold at least a second
class degree in equine studies/science or
a related biological science degree. Applicants

course is designed for students who plan to
work in the equine industry in a 'hands-on'
manner, having a strong emphasis on applied
horse handling skills in either a stud or
equitation-based environment. It also provides
a broad basis for academic study and progression
combining areas such as equine science and
business management. |

| The
specific aim of this course is to develop an extensive
understanding of the scientific principles behind equine
athletic performance and other related areas. The application
of scientific knowledge to the practical situation is
developed through practical classes making extensive
use of the College's specialist facilities, in conjunction
with required industrial placements either in the UK
or overseas. |
FDSc
Equine Breeding and Stud Management

This
course aims to provide students with the opportunity
to widen and enhance their practical skills, whilst
developing an extensive understanding of the scientific
and management principles behind equine breeding.
Assessed yard and foaling duties in conjunction
with a required industrial placement either in the
UK or overseas, aim to enhance the employability
of graduates within all sectors of the stud industry.
Students will make extensive use of the excellent
facilities available at Lordships Stud and have
the opportunity to become involved with the showing
and production of native ponies and young horses
at county and national level.

| Higher
certificate in Equine Studies |

|
This part-time course provides an introduction
to higher education study for students
who are either already working in the
equine industry or who have gained horse
management experience within their leisure
time. It aims to provide students from
a range of different backgrounds with
a realistic overview of employment opportunities
within the equine industry, and enhance
the specific practical competencies,
study skills and academic knowledge
necessary for career development or
progression to another H.E course of
study. This course is particularly suitable
for mature students due to its part
time evening delivery.
