Founded in 1988, The Open College of Equine Studies (TOCES) has developed an excellent reputation world-wide for equine distance learning programmes.

The distance learning courses offered by TOCES include:

MSc Equine Science
BSc Equine Behaviour and Welfare
BSc Equine Science
BA Equine Studies
Foundation Degree Equine Studies
Foundation Degree Equine Behaviour and Welfare Higher National
Diploma/Certificate National Certificate Equine Studies
Professional Development Qualifications
BHS Horse Knowledge and Care Stages 1 - 4
BHS Horse Owners Certificates Levels 1 - 4

As the courses are offered on a flexible modular basis, they are ideal for those with work, family and horse commitments.

Co-ordinated by the Head of Equine Studies, Julie Brega, TOCES prides itself on the calibre and enthusiasm of those involved in the writing of course material, lecturing, tutoring, student support and administration.

All tutors are highly qualified - the Head of Equine Higher and Postgraduate Education at TOCES is Dr Amanda Badnell-Waters. Amanda is well known for her research in the field of equine clinical behaviour and holds a PhD from the University of Bristol.

Whilst not mandatory in all courses, one of the highlights of a TOCES course is the Study Weeks - students get together at TOCES’s new premises on the Boxted Estate near Bury St Edmunds. Based in a traditional Victorian stable yard in the grounds of a 14th century moated baronial hall, Period buildings have been converted to offices, classroom and a library.

Facilites include an all-weather arena within a walled garden, parkland grazing and excellent hacking. On Study Weeks meals are taken in the farmhouse and students stay at a local historic private college.

A great benefit of TOCES being located close to Newmarket is that during Study Weeks students can visit centres of excellence such as The Animal Health Trust, Beaufort Cottage Equine Hospital and the National Stud. In addition, daily lectures are delivered by leading experts with international reputations in their fields of research.

Whether studying purely for the joy of learning about horses or to gain a professional qualification, the combination of a friendly and efficient team of administrative staff, expert lecturers and tutors, interesting Study Weeks and the beautiful setting make studying with The Open College a rewarding and enjoyable experience.
