The question was raised could the same health benefits
of rapeseed oil found for humans be related to horses.
Through some research and discussions with a food
scientist it was found that the answer to our questions
was ‘Yes’. The product was trialled with
some riders who compete at Dressage, Show Jumping
and One Day Events and through further internet research
we found that rapeseed oil is used extensively in
Canada, America and Australia but is known as Canola
Oil.
Rapeseed oil naturally contains the essential fatty
acids Omega 3 and Omega 6, along with the antioxidant
vitamin E. The body is unable to synthesize Omega
3 and 6 and it must therefore be present in the diet.
Although any oil can be fed for energy, for the performance
horse it is essential to keep Omega 3 and 6 in the
correct balance for performance, soundness and health.
Omega 6 is vital for healing as it is a precursor
of the inflammatory response needed after injury,
Omega 3 is necessary for reducing inflammation; however
it is possible that too much Omega 3 without 6 could
inhibit healing.
Oil is well established as a useful part of the competition
horse’s diet since it provides the muscles with
a sustained energy source, vital for the controlled
power needed for performance. If oil is to be fed
we believe Lincoln Omega Gold For Horses is perfect
as it is naturally balanced in Omega 3 and 6 which
is vital if a horse is to look and perform at its
best.
