Three first aid kits (retail value of
£38.95) to be given away to three lucky winners for this
months competition
Joseph Sampson Gamgee (usually calling
himself just Sampson Gamgee) was born in 1828. His friends included
Joseph Lister and Louis Pasteur and Sampson became a champion
of aseptic technique at an early stage of his career. By 1854
he had became a Fellow of the College of Surgeons in Edinburgh
and was considered the expert in wound dressings - for both veterinary
and human uses. It was thus quite natural that, when William Robinson
of Chesterfield began his pioneering work on cotton wool, he contacted
Dr Gamgee with ideas for wound dressings based on cotton wool.
The outcome of the resultant collaboration was the first version
of Gamgee Tissue wound dressings - layers of cotton wool and tissue
sandwiched between two layers of sterile gauze. The dressing rapidly
became extremely well regarded and the term 'Gamgee' is still
used today as a colloquial term for high quality cotton wool.
Horses injured on the battlefield were amongst the first to benefit
from Sampson's pioneering work in wound care.
The Gamgee dressings available today are made
from more modern materials but are still based on the principles
of high absorbency and excellent cushioning specified by Dr Gamgee
as anyone who uses Gamgee will know.
