Lighting Stables and Yards with Energy and money efficiency

How often has your blood pressure shot up when the stable yards was so dark that you tripped over a broom handle, or you switched the yard light on only to experience a flash, a ping and darkness? Even under good conditions, a tungsten bulb in regular use will run only about one year. A compact fluorescent bulb has a life 10 times longer, so once installed it will last:

All night use 2 1/2 years
This saves considerable time and effort up a ladder (usually in semi-darkness), also ferreting for a screwdriver, only to find it is worng type for the screws in that particular light cover!
