OLD AND NEW WORKING TOGETHER AT BATSFORD TIMBER

A combination of traditional and modern preservative treatments for timber is now available for customers of Batsford Timber down in the South West and Midland regions.

Batsford has always been a name recognised for the supply of quality fencing and landscaping timbers and a major part of that supply has traditionally been with creosote protection. Peter House of Batsford explained “Throughout history creosote has been used as a very effective protection for timber and we still offer an extensive range of our industrial and agricultural fencing products with creosote or shale oil treatment. We find that these are still the most effective protection for timbers that are used in chalk based environments, which are very plentiful around the South West area.”

But the last few months has also seen Batsford Timber move over to Tanalith E preservative for the protection of the rest of the fencing, landscaping and garden timbers they offer. Again Peter House explained the move. “With new legislation forbidding the use of chromium based wood preservatives from 1st September this year we started to look at the best replacement new generation product for ourselves and our customers. Not only did we want a smooth transition for Batsford Timber, we needed to be fully confident in the long term preservative protection any new product would provide. Our customers deserve only the best.”

As managing director Bob Clark points out, “We had always recognised the Tanalised brand as the most renowned name in treated timber – it is what our customers have always asked for when referring to treated timber. So when Arch Timber Protection introduced the operational and performance benefits of Tanalith E preservative the change decision become fairly simple. Not only would Tanalith E provide us with a simpler and more consistent treatment process than our existing chrome based product, but from the extensive independent field trial data on new generation preservative products, it was obvious that Tanalith E would also provide the best protection – particularly for in ground contact timbers, which form the bulk of our supply.”

Conversion of the Longleat treatment operation took place in July and plant operator Ron Corper commented on the change. “I have already noticed a real improvement for us with Tanalith E. The colour of the treated timber is more consistent and the treated timber also dries much quicker. On the operational side the mixing and dosing of the Tanalith E preservative and its additives is much more professional. I feel that I am supplying our customers with an improved treated timber product.”

“Tanalith E will enables us to fulfil the expectations of our all customers - fencing contractors, landscaping companies, construction businesses, farms and estates - with the added benefit of now complying with shipping directives, as a proportion of our specialist products are destined for foreign climes.”

Conversion of Batsford other treatment facility at Moreton in the Marsh to Tanalith E has also now been completed. “We have not only been impressed with the credentials of Tanalith E but also in the back up services of Arch”, commented Jon Wise of Batsford. “Conversion was a simple and smooth process and their marketing team is now helping us to promote the real benefits of Tanalised E treated timber to our customers.”
