Preparing for a show -
Most riders start their competitive careers with some form of mounted games. Not only is it fun but a wide range of riding skills are learnt without even noticing!

Preparation of the Horse
Your tack should be given a special clean, with bits and irons polished. Cleaning tack and checking it is in good condition are a vital part of competing. Keep leather soft and supple and all metalwork polished. Headcollars should be polished. In the summer your pony should be given a complete wash, but be careful to make sure he doesn't get a chill while drying off. Wash the body first and then rug him before finishing the legs, mane and tail. The gymkhana pony does not need to be plaited but the show pony does.

Make a list

List all your kit for the show and tick off as you pack it
carefully into the horsebox, trailer or car. For example:-

- Bridle
- Saddle + girths, clean numnah & polished irons
- Day sheet or Rug to wear during the day
- Sweat rug and washing equipment
- Full grooming kit
- Competition boots eg brushing boots
- Water buckets
- Water containers
- Hay net

If your horse has registration papers that are required for the
competition make sure that you have packed those as well.

Preparation of the Rider
Once the horse is ready it is now time to prepare yourself, the rider. What you need to take with you clothes-wise does depend on what type of competition you are entering. For example:-

Dressed for show jumping

Always check the rule books for the appropriate dress code at different levels of competition You should always pack plenty of drinks and some food for your day out.

At the Show
Leave plenty of time for your journey so that when you arrive you are not in a mad rush. Go to the secretary to declare and collect your numbers. Then locate the ring that you will be competing in so that you know where to go. Get you horse tacked up and give him a final shine up with a rubber, apply quarter markings and oil his hooves. You are now ready to go to your ring and warm up.
