Strains
-
Strains
can be very serious. First-aid measures are immediate applications
of ice to the affected area, pressure bandaging and complete rest.
call
the vet and follow
his/her advice.
Strains
are usually caused by "false" strides or "deep"
going and are most likely to occur when galloping or jumping.
The importance of slow preparation in the horse's fittening work
cannot be over-emphasised.
Tendon
strides take much longer to recover compared to other damaged
tissues. A bad strain can easilyput a horse out of action for
anything up to a year, or even permanently.
A
leg strain may be indicated by a hot, painful swelling, often
accompanied by lameness. call
the vet and
rest the horse.Following cold treatment a vet will often prescribe
pressure bandaging. A firm, evenly applied stretch bandage over
Gamgee will help support an injured tendon. Tubigrip can be used
for strains and to keep swelling down. Pulled on like a stocking,
it can be taped in place. Cut a
gap over prominent bones
