A
cast horse -
This
can present quite a frightening picture, but with care it is usually
possible to help the horse to its feet, with the help of someone
else.
Assess the position of the horse and see if it is possible to
shift them. If not, quickly get two ropes (lunge reins will do),
and loop them round the pasterns of the furthest fore and
hind legs. Do not tie on.
Whilst
you do this, your assistant, if you have one, can keep the horse
still by kneeling on his head but avoiding his eye. Stand well
back and pull the horseover; it is helpful for the assistant to
pull the horse's head over at the same time. Beware of flailing
hooves.
Let
go of the ropes the moment the horse is over, so that it can then
get up normally.
