| TWO
ELITES AWARDED AT SOUTHVIEW
Two showjumping colts took Elite premiums at
the 2011 Baileys Horse Feeds/British Equestrian
Federation (BEF) Futurity at Southview recently.
The standard was high and there were several
other horses that came very close to receiving
this top grade.
Danny Kannan scored 9.14 in the showjumping
section to take the highest score of the day
for Jonathan Parrott of Wrexham. This KWPN three
year old is by Kannan out of a Burggraff mare
Kormeline. He is owned and bred by Jonathan
Parrott of Wrexham. All three evaluators, Carrie
Adams, Sheri Tozer-Rob and Mark Shaw were hugely
impressed by technique over a fence. This Elite
premium indicates that the horse has the potential
and outlook to perform at international level.
Jonathan bred Danny Kannan from his consistent
broodmare Kormeline. He purchased her because
of her great bloodlines and has had several
offspring for Jonathan all who are proving to
be talented prospects. Danny Kannan is by Ken
Rehill’s jumping stallion Kannan. Danny
Kannan is already a licensed stallion with the
AES studbook and Johnathan said “it was
a last minute decision to take him to the Futurity,
he is a truly versatile and talented horse,
he hasn’t jumped at all since his stallion
licensing back in April, but he was fantastic
last week. He made a bee line for the jumps
and the evaluators were impressed with not only
his ability to jump but also the fact that he
obviously enjoys it so much. He has also covered
11 mares this season.”
Jonathan has sold a half share in Danny to
event rider Helen Waterhouse. Helen has had
great success with Danny’s half brother,
Call Again Casanova with whom she has qualified
for the 4 year old Burghley Young Event Horse
(BYEH) Finals in September. He is out of Kormeline
and by Johnathan’s own stallion Casanova
Du Domaine Z. Another half brother Boston JRP,
who is by Lauriston and also out of Kormeline
has qualified for the 5 year old BYEH for owners
Martin and Sue Belcham. Helen plans to qualify
Danny for the 4 year old final next year. Johnathan
said “Danny will either become an eventer
or a showjumper – whichever he is best
at! Next year we will definitely aim at the
young event horse classes and probably also
the four year old showjumping classes”.
Kormeline’s other offspring include a
2 year old full brother to Danny, called Ever
Ready Freddie, who has been sold to Jonathan
Lee of Middlewich. The only filly Kormeline
has bred is a yearling full sister to Danny,
Jonathan will keep her to compete. She also
has a foal at foot who is by Casanova Du Domaine
Z, and is now in foal to Deco De Landetti Z.
Johnathan is very proud of Kormeline, “it
is brilliant what she has done for me, all the
foals she has look to be going places and are
very high quality. I make my living from breaking
in horses and I breed horses because I enjoy
it. We will carry on with taking the youngsters
to the Futurity after Danny’s success
in it”.
The other Elite of the day was taken by colt
foal Waterloo also in the showjumping section
on a score of 9.04. Event rider, Natasha Halliday
bred and owns him. Waterloo is out of Natasha’s
talented mare the graded KWPN Thongrha. Natasha
bought Thongrha as a hunter, she said “I
got her home and decided I really liked the
look of her, Karina Duncan from the Old Lodge
Stud was over so we decided to give her a jump
and she was jumping 1.40 metres easily, we were
so impressed!” At the end of the 2010
hunting season, Thongrha caught her foot and
injured it, so Natasha decided to put her in
foal. Waterloo’s sire is the Belgian warmblood
showjumping stallion Supertrooper De Ness who
stands at The Old Lodge stud.
Natasha works as an equine osteopath and plans
to sell Waterloo, she breeds a few foals every
year and is thrilled at the success Waterloo
has had. Although she said “if he isn’t
sold I’ll keep him and take him jumping
in the young horse classes as a four year old
and see how we get on. This is the first time
we have been to the Futurity and its great to
have the feedback from the evaluators”.
A Grafenstolz sired event foal, Gypsy Squire
took home a score of 8.96 for an extremely high
Higher First premium for owner and breeder Gary
Foggon from Stoke-On-Trent. Gary, who worked
as head rider for top dressage trainer Stephen
Clarke for several years bred Gypsy Squire from
his very talented mare Bonny Bank Jay Jay. Bonny
Bank Jay Jay is the first horse Gary has ever
owned, he bought her as an unbroken four year
old and the pair have been very successful,
they were European 2* eventing champions in
2007 and have won at Intermediate Eventing and
been placed at Advanced. Bonny Bank Jay Jay
has also worked to Prix St George level in dressage.
Gary said “she hurt her hock in 2008 and
whilst she was never lame on it I wanted to
make sure she would be fully recovered before
riding her. I decided to put her in foal and
we now have Gypsy Squire and a yearling, Gypsy
Fortune from her. I hope to start competing
her again, but ultimately she will retire and
I will breed from her again”. He then
went on to say, “I plan to keep Gypsy
Squire entire and compete him in dressage and
eventing when he is old enough, he will also
go for an HIS stallion grading”. Gypsy
Squire is by the popular and talented stallion
Grafenstolz.
Also taking a score of 8.96 was CHAPS registered,
dressage two year old, Heathersedge Eurodizney.
Kerrie and Laurie bred the piebald Heathersedge
Eurodizney from their homebred family mare Heathersedge
Hattrick known at home as Hattie. Kerrie said
“we bought Hattie’s mother Minnie
as we felt sorry for her. We then discovered
she is very well bred and has a ZFDP German
foal premium so we put her in foal to Sonny
Steele to produce Hattie”. Hattie has
so far produced four foals for the family, all
by different stallions. This year Hattie is
in foal to the renowned dressage stallion Sarkozi.
Heathersedge Eurodizney’s sire is the
Hanoverian, Benneton Dream, who was the 2007
German Dressage Bundeschampion.
Kerrie and Laurie plan to keep Heathersedge
Eurodizney, and he will be broken in next year
and then will compete in showing and dressage
classes as a four year old with Laurie. Kerrie
said “both Laurie and I work full time,
so breeding horses is very much a hobby. Laurie
rides them at the shows and I do the ground
work”. They have had great success with
another homebred horse, Heathersedge Eurovision
with whom Laurie has won classes at the Horse
Of The Year Show and the Royal International
Horse Show. There are high hopes that Heathersedge
Eurodizney will follow in these footsteps.
BEF Head of Equine Development Jan Rogers said,
“Southview is a new venue for Futurity
this year and has been really well supported
by people both from the region as well as many
who have undertaken some quite lengthy journeys
to get here. We have seen some very impressive
potential showjumpers today which is very exciting
for the future”.
