Horslyx provide an answer to this dilemma with a range
of highly palatable, nutrient rich licks designed
to balance the deficiencies found in forage and grazing
which, when offered in a controlled manner, will help
maintain healthy skin, coat and hooves as well as
retain a strong immune system without piling on the
pounds and risking potential health conditions.
Horses are designed to eat sugar and can efficiently
digest it providing the intakes are little and often
as they are when grazing, eating hay/haylage or when
licking Horslyx. The molasses in Horslyx is used as
a palatable carrier for all the essential vitamins,
minerals and trace elements required to maintain optimum
health, much like a sugar coated human multi-vitamin
tablet. Because the molasses in Horslyx is fed ‘little
and often’ the nutrients are absorbed in the
upper intestine and don’t upset the balance
of micro flora in the hind cut – which reduces
the risk of laminitis. The type of sugar and rate
of intake is the key to safety, in fact sugar is a
vital element of a horses’ diet; the central
nervous system, including the brain, can only use
glucose (the purest form of sugar) as an energy source.
For an average 500kg horse the amount of grass he
consumes in a day is around 50kg which equates to
roughly 2000g sugar, while hay consumption is on average
11.5kg per day, equating to roughly 1000g sugar. The
recommended amount of Horslyx, 250g per day, equates
to just 82.5g of sugar - which is the same as 2lbs/1Kg
of good hay or 2.5Kg of fresh grass.
For those horses and ponies prone to weight gain and
laminitis the rate of consumption is the key to retaining
safe feeding practice. If a horse or pony is on restricted
rations of forage they may be hungrier which increases
the risk of overconsumption. Allowing them restricted
access to Horslyx will give you peace of mind that
they are still receiving a balanced diet without the
risk of adding unwanted calories. Restriction can
be physically allowing them access for 1-2hrs per
day or using the 5Kg Holder with the restrictor bars
which will allow 24hr restricted access.
