Going hot and cold?

Hot and cold therapy has seen a real rise in popularity in recent times and with the effective results offered in a non invasive and easy to administer way, it's not hard to see why.

Cold Therapy
Cold therapy has been used for many, many years and although the most basic form of cold therapy is through using ice or frozen vegetables; wraps, cool packs and cold bandages are the more modern alternatives with the added benefit of offering compression with the application of cold.

Cold compression helps to constrict the blood vessels helping to decrease the flow of fluids to the tissues and therefore reducing inflammation. The application of cold also slows the release of chemicals that cause pain and inflammation and decreases the feeling in the area by reducing the sensitivity of the nerve endings.

Cold therapy should be employed as soon as possible after an injury to get the best results. It can also be used as a way to prevent injuries if it is applied after strenuous exercise…this is particularly relevant for horses that put their limbs under great strain when working. As for injuries, conditions such as bumps, bruises, strains and sprains are ideal for treatment with cold therapy.

Heat Therapy
Heat treatment is another age old remedy and, like cold therapy, produces amazing results. When heat is applied to an area, the warmth dilates the blood vessels; this then increases the amount of blood and therefore oxygen that comes into that area. It also helps to soothe and relax muscles and ligaments.

Heat is often applied in the healing stages of an injury. It can also be used on stiff and tight muscles to relax them and prevent problems. Heat therapy should be used on recommendation of a vet.
