| EGUS
is a debilitating condition known to result
in poor performance, with racehorses and competition
horses at exceptional risk. Up to 93% of racehorses
and 60% of other performance horses are found
to have ulcers on endoscopic examination, the
causative factors including high cereal and
grain / low forage diets, sudden changes in
diet as can happen at weaning for example, stable
confinement and exercise induced stress.
The paper reports a trial involving sophisticated
gastroscopy (scoping) of national hunt thoroughbred
racehorses aged between 4 and 10 years, all
of which were routinely scoped for veterinary
purposes regardless of the trial and simultaneously
graded for severity of ulcers present.
Following supplementation with GNFTM for a period
of six weeks, further routine scoping confirmed
that 73% of supplemented horses showed an overall
decrease in ulcer severity across all categories.
This was in comparison to 33% of control horses
(not fed GNF) showing an increase in severity
and a further 33% of control horses having no
change in ulcer score.
The results are significant and prove the effectiveness
of GNFTM as a nutritional aid in the management
of equine gastric ulceration. Added to the horse’s
feed ration, GNF contains prebiotics, important
amino acids, seaweed extract that’s rich
in essential nutrients and also minerals identified
as important in maintaining a healthy digestive
system.
Commenting on the research, Tom Barrett said,
“Due to the exceptionally high prevalence
of EGUS in the thoroughbred racehorse and competition
horse sectors and the limited availability of
clinically proven nutritional feed supplements
on the market, the results of this research
confirm that GNF can provide an effective nutritional
tool in the management of EGUS, in conjunction,
where appropriate, with drug therapy.
“We are obviously delighted this internationally-presented
research has proven the effectiveness of GNF,
as it confirms that TRM’s ongoing commitment
to research and development of cutting-edge
nutritional support for performance horses is
producing excellent management solutions for
the international equestrian industry.
