Celebrating it’s 50th Anniversary the centre piece of this year’s Autumn Classic of Eventing was undoubtedly the retro styled Cross Country track designed by Captain Mark Phillips with the spectacular new lake crossing at it’s heart .Day one started with William Fox-Pitt and his four star newcomer Parklane Hawk setting the standard with a promising 39.7 points which was only narrowly bettered on the following day by Germany’s Simone Deitermann and Free Easy NSW.With 33 fences and 45 jumping efforts on the 6650 metre journey across Burghley’s undulating terrain, Saturdays Cross Country was certain to test both stamina and concentration.The scene was set for a truly nail biting finish with William Fox-Pitt bidding to re-write the record books after his five previous successes on Chaka in 1994, Highland Lad in 2002, Ballincoola in 2005, Parkmore Ed in 2007 and Tamarillo in 2008. Great Britain were going for an unprecedented 9th successive team title at the 31st running of these championships held at Luhmuhlen in Northern Germany but came up against a host nation team in irresistible form. Germany dominated the dressage leader board with five in the top ten, including World Champion Michael Jung and La Biosthetique Sam, the favourites for the Individual title. He lay in second behind team mate Ingrid Klimke and Butts Abraxxas and they maintained their scores and positions after the cross country with faultless rounds. However, in the show jumping, the World Champion jumped a clear round but, Ingrid suffered the agonies of 6 poles down to let in team mate Sandra Auffarth for Silver and Individual rider Frank Ostholt for the Bronze to compete a German clean sweep. Great Britain relinquished Silver medal position to the French in the show jumping after Mary King and Imperial Cavalier crashed out of the competition in the cross country and each of her team mates had one down in the show jumping finale. Eighty competitors representing twenty one nations set out on the four days of competition to decide team and individual honours. Team favourites were undoubtedly the reigning European champions Great Britain and despite trailing Germany after the dressage phase they would sweep to victory with their three top riders William Fox-Pitt, Mary King and Nicola Wilson all finishing on their dressage scores. The fiftieth annual Burghley Horse Trials attracted world class riders from thirteen countries and all five continents. After a challenging Dressage test, Ruth Edge on Two Thyme led the way, followed closely by Caroline Powell on Lenamore and defending champion, Oliver Townend on Carousel Quest. Powell then produced a foot perfect round to take the lead in the cross country. In the Show-jumping phase, despite challenges from Mary King on Apache Sauce, Oliver Townend on Carousel Quest and William Fox-Pitt on Macchiato, Caroline, riding 17-year-old Lenamore, forged a foot perfect round to claim her first major title, much to the delight of the appreciative crowd.

83 combinations competed at the 61st Mitsubishi Badminton Horse Trials, representing 11 Nations and for the 3rd time in the last 5 years Australia came out on top as Paul Tapner won on Inonothing. The cross country proved the most influential of the 3 disciplines as many top riders fell foul of Hugh Thomas’ demanding course and the tried and tested combinations came out on top. Burghley Horse Trials 2009.

In blustery conditions the 49th Burghley Horse Trials attracted 80 of the world’s best horses and riders, representing 12 nations from Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil and North America. After the opening Dressage phase Oliver Townend on Carousel Quest led the way but with just 12 penalties separating the top 25, the competition was wide open as 77 contenders prepared for the crucial Cross Country phase. Despite incurring three point two time penalties, he narrowly retained the lead but with just one show jumping fence in hand over Australia’s Sam Griffiths on Happy Times and two in hand over New Zealand’s Caroline Powell on Lenamore and America’s Phillip Dutton on Truluck. HSBC FEI European Eventing Championships 2009 which is available now on DVD. In the build up to the 30th running of these Championships the Germans were clear favourites to lift the team title having already secured World and Olympic Gold. Great Britain have won the last seven European team titles but few expected them to lead after the dressage and then sweep all before them, despite Badminton winner Flint Curtis not being on top form. Kristina Cook (GBR) won Silver in the Europeans in 1993 on Song & Dance Man and a brilliant Bronze in Hong Kong last year in the Olympics on Miners Frolic. Despite her concerns re the cross country course not suiting her long striding majestic thoroughbred she would lead from start to finish on Miners Frolic to claim her first Gold although the winning margin in the end was less than a second from the ‘find’ of the event, Piggy French (GBR) and Some Day Soon. Badminton Horse Trial 2007 which is available now on DVD at £19.99 rrp. 77 combinations from 13 countries passed the Ground Jury at the start of the 2007 event but 22 would withdraw before the cross country due to the firm ground. Despite this, the competition lacked nothing in excitement and drama with a truly international flavour to the leader board. Germany were favopurites for the team gold and they did not disappoint the home crowds by leading throughout the 4 days.

However, the star of the show was the reigning European Champion Zara Philips, who showed an ice cool nerve in the dressage, considerable skill in conquering the cross country course and then great courage when hanging on to her lead in the showjumping to take individual honours.

Andrew Hoy is renowned for his excellent lecture demonstrations around the world. In this video he explains and demonstrates the simplicity to his Four by Four approach, that has taken him to the top of the sport of eventing.

Pippa and Willia Funnell took to the road in early 2004 with some of their best horses and The Funnell Factor played to full houses at 4 different venues.

The show starts with Pippa and William riding two young horses with some advice on basic advice on flatwork and jumping. Pippa then rides her Grand Slam hero Primmore's Pride as she gives a detailed demonstration of warming up for and riding a dressage test. The first half finishes with William seeking advice from his wife on dressage and doing rather well!

In the second hald these is great hilarity as William is the cross country guinea pig on one of Pippa's younger horses and to end William gets his won back as Pippa jumps the 7 year old stallion. A wonderful evening enjoyed by all who saw it and captured forever for horse who didn't.

Since she was a young girl Pippa Funnell has possessd a single-minded determination to make it to the top in the sport of Eventing.

Using extensive archive material along with footage shot at Pippa's home and at a competition, this is the story of a charming but utterly dedicated horsewoman who became the darling of Eventng at the start of the 21st Century. The road to success was a long and hard one but Supreme Rock gave her back to back European titles in 1999 and 2001 and then jet propelled the sport of eventing into the public conscience when winning the Rolex Grand Slam. Highlights of all three 4 star victories in 2003 have been added with Pippa telling her side of the story.
