BHS exams

The Preliminary Teaching Test is the first BHS teaching exam. Once candidates have passed this and their stage 2 , they can begin to log the required 500 hours of teaching. To attain the full BHS Assistant Instructor qualification on the BHS ladder, candidates must also pass the stage 3 exam.In this programme, we follow a group of hopeful candidates through the exam and see an example of a flat work lesson, a jumping lesson, a lead rein lesson to children and a lunge lesson. In the BHS Stage 1 exam, the day starts at 8.30am with an examiner briefing and is usually finished by 1.00pm. Six pupils take the exam and are followed through the practical and practical oral where they are required to have a basic knowledge of horse care and confirmation. In the riding section the candidates ride two horses, both on the flat and then over poles on the ground.

Before entering the riding section of this examination the candidate must have passed the BHS Riding & Road Safety Test. Five Candidates take this exam and are followed through the practical and practical oral, where they are required to show a greater knowledge of horse care than in Stage 1. They are also seen lungeing for exercise and in the riding section they ride on the flat in an enclosed area, outside in an open space and over a course of show jumps .

In the BHS Stage 3 Exam, we see five candidates taking part in a group discussion in the classroom covering topics such as minor ailments and fitness. In the riding they are shown on the flat and cross country fences. The practical and practical oral sections are covered in the stable yard and include trotting a horse up for inspection and loading into a horse box. Candidates are also seen exercising a horse on the lunge in the indoor school.
